The 161 major Indian reservoirs were filled over two-thirds of the capacity, benefitting from a six per cent surplus rain under the influence of the South-West monsoon.

Data from the Central Water Commission (CWC) showed that the level was 126.482 billion cubic metres (BCM) or 69.31 per cent  of the 182.461 BCM capacity. The storage was 50 percentage points higher than last year and the usual level (last 10 years).

The India Meteorological Department on Thursday said the monsoon was surplus in June-July and would be above-normal for the remainder of the season. However, 31 per cent of the country’s 728 districts received deficient rainfall during the period.

But prospects for the kharif season look good with the overall acreage up 5 per cent and reservoir storage healthy besides projection of surplus rainfall.

Overall, seven reservoirs were filled to capacity this week. Among the States, Goa’s lone reservoir was full, while Tamil Nadu and Mizoram boasted of over 95 per cent storage.

In the northern region, the level in the 11 reservoirs topped 60 per cent this week of 19.836 BCM capacity at 12.241 BCM. The storage in Rajasthan was 85 per cent. In Punjab, it was 46.33 per cent and in Himachal, 59 per cent.

The storage in 27 reservoirs of the eastern region was 11.297 BCM or 52 per cent of the 21.724 BCM capacity. Besides Mizoram, the level in Tripura was above 87 per cent. In Bengal and Bihar, the storage was above 60 per cent. Barring Odisha and Nagaland, the storage in the rest of the States in the region was above 50 per cent.

The level in the 50 reservoirs of the western region was 73 per cent of the 37.357 BCM capacity at 27.264 BCM. Besides Goa, Maharashtra reservoirs were filled to nearly 84 per cent of the capacity, while Gujarat dams were filled to 61 per cent.

In the central region, the storage in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh increased sharply. In the 28 reservoirs in the region, the level was 70.5 per cent of 48.588 BCM capacity at 34.277 BCM. In Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the level was up at 75.5 per cent, and 70 per cent, respectively. In Chhattisgarh, the storage was 66 per cent, but in Uttarakhand it was 44 per cent.
